Alvarez Drops Kovalev Thrice in 7th for KO

After taking a decent amount of damage through six rounds, Eleider Alvarez pulled off an upset by knocking Sergey Kovalev down three times in the seventh to win the WBO and IBA Light Heavyweight Titles.

After a feeling-out round in the first, Kovalev applied pressure quickly to start the second, making Alvarez eat punches and cutting off the ring. Alvarez landed some shots in a brief exchange, but the round ended with Kovalev chasing the challenger down.

Alvarez started to show some true power in the third, forcing Kovalev to feel his full force. Kovalev, however, fired back with heavy leather of his own. Alvarez also showed some footwork by avoiding Kovalev’s punches throughout the final seconds of the round.

Alvarez, however, was rocked in the fourth with a series of punches, and while he tried holding his own, Kovalev seemed to be in complete control, albeit somewhat fatigued. Kovalev dominated the next two rounds, all to set up the shock that would come in the seventh.

Kovalev seemed dominant in the seventh, until the second half of the round, when one quick right hand dropped the champion. He got up quickly but Alvarez dropped him with a quick and furious combination less than a minute later. Kovalev got up once more, but one punch sent him crashing back to the canvas as the referee called the fight, giving Alvarez the minor upset of a win and titles.
