Arum Doesn’t List Pacquiao As A Top Welterweight
It seems there is still a bit of an acrimonious relationship between Bob Arum and his former fighter, Manny Pacquiao.
With Pacquiao promoting his July 15th showdown with Lucas Matthysse on his own, as a co-promotion with Golden Boy Promotions, Arum has thrown a little shade towards the Filipino star.
“The welterweight division has been, going back to the 80s, with Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns, a top division. Now there are a lot of great welterweights out there,” said Arum, who is the main promoter for the WBO welterweight title fight between the two.
“Two of them are fighting on Saturday, and there’s Errol Spence, who is a terrific fighter, (Keith) Thurman, (Shawn) Porter and (Danny) Garcia, and there is a guy that you should be looking at also who will be on the card.”
Arum would not mention Pacquiao’s name until prompted, and would make light of Pacquiao’s senatorial status.
“There is Manny Pacquiao, well, he is more of a politician, but he is a fighter, I guess,” Arum said during the conference call.
“There are a lot of good, good welterweight fighters,” said Arum.
