Askren: Covington Is A “Poor Man’s” Me

Former ONE Championship and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren, is the latest fighter to call out Colby Covington, but this time to call him a “poor man’s version” of Askren.

“C’mon, [Colby Covington] is a poor [man’s] version of me,” Askren wrote on Twitter. “Couldn’t accomplish in wrestling, got choked out by subpar [Warlley Alves] and trash talking sounds like his IQ is 85 (which it may be although I can’t confirm).”

Askren is referring to Covington’s only pro loss, a first round submission loss at UFC 194 to Alves. Covington has turned that loss into a seven fight winning streak, capped with an interim welterweight championship victory over Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 225.

“Funky” walked away from MMA after defeating Shinya Aoki at ONE Championship’s “Immortal Pursuit” event on November 24th of last year.

The undefeated fighter has aimed for a move to the UFC, but has well publicized issues with UFC President, Dana White.
