Parker Ready For Joshua After ‘Awful Opponent’ Fury
It seems that if WBA, IBO, and IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua defeats Kubrat Pulev in October, if Kevin Barry had it his way, Joseph Parker is the next man up for the charismatic British champion.
Parker made his first defense outside of his home country of New Zealand this weekend when he defeated mandatory challenger Hughie Fury for Parker’s WBO title. And even though there was some controversy with the scoring of the fight, as another 118-110 card came in one week after the Alvarez-Golovkin fight, Parker’s trainer made no bones about what is next for his fighter.
“We’re in a very good position, we’ve just got our mandatory (Hughie Fury) out of the way against a horrible opponent. One I didn’t want to fight… Now we are free to chose a style and opponent that suits Joseph. That makes me and our team really excited.”
That style seems to be Anthony Joshua…
“Obviously the golden goose is Anthony Joshua and we thought 18 months ago we would be stepping into the ring with him. I think Joseph matches up very well against Joshua and styles make fights. I’ve also thought his particular style will suit us. That’s a fight we would love to be involved in.”
Yet, there is another fighter in the way of the Joshua-Parker face off, as Deontay wilder who is the current WBC champion wants Joshua in 2018 if he successfully defends in Brooklyn in November against Luis Ortiz. While either fight would be potential major business for boxing, at this point there are more questions than answers in which of these three will clash next.
