Barry: Parker’s Resume Is Better Than Joshua’s
As it gets closer to becoming a reality, Joseph Parker’s trainer Kevin Barry believes that his man has a better resume than that of fellow heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua.
“If you look at the resumes of both guys – Joshua, he has two names that really stand out – a 40-year-old Wladimir Klitschko and a 36-year-old Carlos Takam. We know that Klitschko was old and had him down and let’s remember two fights before Klitschko went 12 rounds with Bryant Jennings and couldn’t knock him down and yet (Luis) Ortiz had Jennings down 5 times.”
“In the Carlos Takam fight he had 12 days notice and no sparring. He had no sparring for that fight. We fought Takam on 3.5 months notice. We got the best there was of Takam and he was a year and half younger and now Joshua is a year and half more developed and he made very hard work of Takam.
“Let’s go backwards from the Klitschko fight. He had Eric Molina. Why the f*** didn’t he fight Takam then? They have had this opportunity to fight Takam ever since we fought him. In fact, a funny story, I remember Joe got a message from Joshua in the dressing room (after the fight) saying, ‘Congratulations. I would have knocked him out in one or two rounds’. Well mate he had his opportunity to knock him out on 12 days notice and he couldn’t do it (editor’s note the referee stopped the fight in the 11th round with Takam on his feet).”
Barry, who is anticipating a spring unification bout between the two, laid out Parker’s resume which he feels compares quite favorably to Joshua’s resume.
“Then on Joe’s resume you have Takam, (Alexander) Dimitrenko, Andy Ruiz who was 29-0 and Hughie Fury who was so fricken awkward no one else would fight him. We got two guys in there in Takam and Ruiz who were in everybody’s top 10. Our resume is better than his,” Barry explained.
