Bellator 184 Recap
Darrion Caldwell was thought to be possibly the biggest challenge for Eduardo Dantas, and Caldwell lived up to his hype.
Caldwell defeated Dantas, one of the longtime faces of Bellator MMA, to win the Bellator Bantamweight Championship in the main event of Bellator 184, which took place from the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma.
After the introductions, where Dantas got into Caldwell’s face, the two squared off in the center, with Caldwell taking Dantas down. Dantas got up but Caldwell took side control and clinched from behind against the cage, where the two spent most of the round. Caldwell continued his momentum in round two, scoring two takedowns throughout the round and drops Dantas with a hook.
Caldwell attempted another takedown about a minute into round three. Dantas got a near takedown, but Caldwell quickly got back up and got back into clinch control. Dantas did better at stuffing takedowns this round, and he even ended the round in top position, giving ground and pound and blooding up Caldwell.
Caldwell once again scored a takedown in the first minute of the fourth, and while Dantas got up, he was stuck against cage again. Caldwell grasped onto Dantas’ legs after the champion got out, and Dantas ended up stuffing Caldwell’s attempt to bring him to the ground again. Dantas attempted to choke Caldwell out, but the challenger got out managed to take Dantas’ back while standing. Dantas stuffed another takedown attempt but Caldwell went behind the champion again.
Round five saw a lot of circling around the cage, though some exchanges. Dantas landed a shot with about two minutes left and chased after the challenger, but Caldwell got Dantas’ back again while standing. Dantas got Caldwell down and got the back, trying to sync in a choke but it was too late as the bell rang.
All three judges scored the bout in Caldwell’s favor, with two giving scores of 48-47 and one giving Caldwell a clean 50-45 sweep.
