“Big” John McCarthy To Join Bellator Broadcast Team
Following the release of longtime announcer Jimmy Smith, in the final days of 2017. Bellator has announced that they’ve not only re-signed a deal with Chael Sonnen to remain in the Bellator booth for select events, but also legendary MMA official “Big” John McCarthy will join Mauro Ranallo and Mike Goldberg on Bellator broadcasts starting Saturday, January 20th.
In a press release sent on Tuesday, Bellator President Scott Coker lauded the addition of McCarthy and the retention of Sonnen, claiming that, “with the addition of ‘Big’ John to our broadcast team, we have put together the premier group of MMA commentators ahead of our Januart 20th debut on the Paramount Network.”
“With John and Chael providing analysis, you’re getting two people who have spent more time in the cage than they have spent with a headset on, and that will translate to a positive viewing experience for Bellator fans.”
McCarthy has been known as one of the most respected officials in Mixed Martial Arts, as an official, as a trainer of judges and officials, abd as a key figure in writing the unified rules of MMA which is recognized by the ABC and athletic commissions all across North America.
“Big” John will follow in Smith’s footsteps by providing original digital content based upon his insight into the fights and fighters of Bellator.
“I first want to say how grateful I am for the opportunity I have been given to work with the
incredible team Bellator has assembled. It is always so hard to leave something you love, but I
have always wanted to step away based on my terms rather than someone else’s. My goals are to
work as hard as I can to meet the expectations everyone will have for me and to hopefully
someday exceed them.” McCarthy said.
“I cannot think of anyone I would rather be working with than Scott Coker. Scott has always been a person I admire because of his honesty, loyalty and love for the martial arts. I want to thank everyone from Bellator and Viacom for the trust you are bestowing upon me to keep the commentating of Bellator MMA at the highest levels of the sport.”
Sonnen’s extension will allow him to act as a color analyst for specific events alongside Bellator’s rotating play-by-play announcers Mauro Ranallo and Mike Goldberg.
McCarthy makes his announcing debut on January 20th at Bellator 192 with welterweight world title main event featuring Douglas Lima defending his championship against Rory MacDonald, and the aforementioned Chael Sonnen competes against “Rampage” Jackson in the opening contest of 2018’s Bellator Heavyweight World
