Chocolatito Targets WBA Title
While some speculated Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s career may have been over, it appears that is not the case.
Rumors of retirement spread following Gonzalez’s knockout loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai earlier this month. Rungvisai ended his undefeated streak back in March, and then became the first man to finish Gonzalez. While Gonzalez is the first boxer from Nicaragua to win championships in four different weight classes, some felt the performance against Rungvisai was not the boxer everyone came to expect.
Now, Gonzalez appears to be eyeing WBA Super Flyweight Champion Kal Yafai. HBO is reportedly heavily considering another card headlined by super flyweights, and Yafai is one of the fighters they’re looking to showcase.
Not to mention, Yafai is promoted by Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, who are looking to break into the American market.
“I would love to fight for the WBA championship, and Akihiro Honda think it’s what we will be looking for. We’ve already talked about that.”
Gonzalez added that for right now, he has decided against another re-match with Rungvisai or changing weight classes. He wants to focus on winning another title at 115 lbs.
“I would like to be champion in another organization to unify titles. It’s a shame [that I lost to Sor Rungvisia], because if I would have won, I could have faced Naoya Inoye in Japan to unify our belts.”
