Cormier Announces Next Opponent
While it won’t be Michael Bisping, as mentioned on Wednesday here on FIGHT SPORTS, there is an opponent for the re-crowned light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. Looking to move past from the Jon Jones controversy, Cormier conducted a poll to see who was the one fighter they wanted to see take on Cormier, instead of going through UFC Matchmakers the champ went looking on his own.
@volkan_oezdemir I asked and people wanna see u and I scrap. So you got it man! Let me figure a date now. They chose u bud! Congrats

While this isn’t an official fight in any way as of yet, there is another hitch in getting this fight going, Jon Jones. It would be logical to some that Cormier’s schedule would be in limbo due to Jones the now former light heavyweight champion due to his right to due process following his failed PED test following UFC 214. The case is in the midst of happening with USADA and the California State Athletic Commission presiding.
Cormier urged fans to give Jones due process, and even told them to let up on Jones following the “B” sample also came up as positive. Yet, as the once again former champion faces a potential four-year ban, he’s shifting focus to his second reign as champion and on Volkan Oezdemir.
Before Jones, who’s still ranked No. 1,tested positive, Oezdemir would call Alexander Gustafsson to “increase the value of the next title shot” and decide the “real king of Europe.” Gustaffson is seen as the truest challenger to Oezdemir’s No. 1 contender’s spot following a knockout of Glover Teixeira in May.
