Cruz-Avalos, Mares-Gutierrez Weigh-Ins
The weigh-ins for tomorrow night’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card have taken place, and the combatants in the scheduled featherweight double main event have all successfully come within the 126 lbs. weight limit.
Leo Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) will defend the WBA “Super” Featherweight Title against Chris Avalos (27-5, 20 KOs), while Abner Mares’ (30-2-1, 15 KOs) WBA “Regular” Featherweight Championship will be on the line when he faces Andres Gutierrez (35-1-1, 25 KOs). The card takes place from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Santa Cruz weighed in at 125.4 pounds, while the other three came in at 126 on the nose.
Santa Cruz and Mares were originally scheduled to face off in a unification bout, but the bout did not come to fruition due to talks breaking down during the negotiation process. Both are appearing on this card and are favorited to defeat their opponents and finally face off in said unification contest sometime in 2018.
This will be Cruz’s first defense in his second reign as champion. He won his WBA Title back from Carl Frampton this past January, getting revenge from a loss against Frampton back in July 2016. Avalos, meanwhile, has been shaky as of late. After winning six straight, with four wins coming by KO/TKO, Avalos has since won just two of his last five bouts, including his most recent contest — a win over Miguel Flores.
Since Mares’ loss to Santa Cruz back in August 2015, Mares has had just one bout — a split-decision win over Jesus Cuellar back in December 2016, where he won the WBA “Regular” Title. He’ll look for his first defense, and earn the rematch with Santa Cruz, as he takes on Gutierrez. Gutierrez had a TKO win over Wallington Orobio in October 2016, bouncing back from a June 2016 loss against Cristian Mijares in June 2016 — the only loss in Gutierrez’s career.
