Dana Interested In Askren When He’s a Free Agent
Many believe that Ben Askren should be in the UFC, and Dana White seems to be coming around to the idea, but isn’t running out to get the former ONE welterweight champion.
In a feud that began when Askren would criticize Dana White and the UFC for not having random drug testing (2012), and a tense negotiation session, but on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, White says he is now open to make a deal.
“Ben Askren hit me up a few months ago and said ‘what are the odds that we can talk about me getting into the UFC?’ White said (transcript via MMA Fighting). “And I said we can absolutely talk about it.”
“And we, I had him, I said you need to send me a letter, before I even talk with you or meet with you or do anything, I need a letter saying you’re a free agent and you’re able to whatever,” White said.
“And he’s not a free agent. He’s not a free agent, he’s under contract with One FC and he’s going to have to go fulfill his contract with them before I would even meet with him or talk to him.”
The undefeated Askren has not fought since a sucessful ONE Championship welterweight title defense against Shinya Aoki in November 2017 via first-round TKO. Askren claimed he was retiring after that fight, but has publicly called for fights against Georges St-Pierre.
