Davis Misses Weight; Stripped of IBF Title
The undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor pay-per-view event is filled with title bouts (and all four PPV bouts are title bouts if you somehow count the WBC Money Title).
But not everyone will be eligible to win a championship. Gervonta Davis, who was scheduled to defend the IBF Junior Lightweight Championship tonight against Francisco Fonseca, weighed in at 132 lbs. and elected not to re-weigh. As a result of missing weight, Davis has been stripped of his championship.
Fonseca can still win the championship with a victory over Davis tonight; however, a Davis win will mean the championship will remain vacant.
Davis addressed the matter via Twitter.
I’m young, I’m growing. I had a chance to make the weight I knew I couldn’t make it & that’s that. I will have a belt again
— Gervonta Davis (@Gervontaa) August 25, 2017
This is not the first time Davis has had issues making weight. Prior to his first title defense in May, against Liam Walsh, Davis needed three tries to successfully make the weight limit.
