De La Hoya: Lemieux May Be Next For Canelo
December 16th may be the biggest night in David Lemieux’s career as he challenges the WBO middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders at Bell Place in Laval, Quebec.
If Saunders takes the win on the HBO showcase for Lemieux, there may be an even greater challenge ahead in Canelo Alvarez.
According to promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, a world title win by Lemieux could put him in position for a major pay-per-view fight against Canelo Alvarez.
It may be an easy negotiation for De La Hoya and Alvarez, due to Lemieux also being promoted by De La Hoya.
The camps for Canelo amd Gennady Golovkin are attempting to finalize a rematch for Cinco De Mayo in 2018.
If De La Hoya is unable to reach an agreement for that rematch, and Lemieux wins in December, that could give Golden Boy the opening to schedule this fight over Canelo-GGG II. And if Alvarez defeats Lemieux and wins the WBO title, it would add another advantage in negotiations and another potential storyline for the rematch for both fighters.
At a press conference earlier this week, De La Hoya started to plant these seeds for Lemieux and Alvarez.
“This fight’s a tremendous opportunity for Lemieux. He’d become the missing piece of the puzzle. I do want to come to terms and make that rematch [for Canelo] with [Golovkin], but if we can’t come to terms … and Lemieux looks spectacular in winning the title from Saunders, that’s another option for Canelo.”
