Garcia-Porter Expected for This August
A scheduled purse bid for Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter set for May 25 was canceled, as the two parties have reached a deal for an upcoming fight.
As reported by Boxing Scene, promoter Tom Brown informed WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman that a purse bid was not necessary, as the two top-ranked WBC welterweights have come to a deal to face off in a bout for the vacant WBC Welterweight Title.
The fight is being targeted for Saturday, August 25, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. If that date does not work out, the bout could take place at some point in September.
The bout between Garcia and Porter was ordered after Keith Thurman surrendered the WBC title back on April 24. Thurman, still the WBA “Super” welterweight champion, has not competed in a ring since winning the WBC title from Garcia back on March 4, 2017. His next fight is expected to be a tune-up bout and the winner of Garcia vs. Porter could eventually face off with Thurman — if Thurman does not compete in an anticipated title unification bout with IBF champion Errol Spence Jr.
Garcia returned to the ring for the first time since the Thurman loss back in February, finishing Brandon Rios in the ninth round. Porter will enter this bout with Garcia on a two-fight win streak, last defeating Adrian Granados back in November to win the WBC Silver Heavyweight Title. Porter stormed the ring following Garcia’s February bout to confront his welterweight contender rival.
