Garcia Wins Unification Battle of Unbeatens

Mikey Garcia’s resume has now grown once again, as he scored a unanimous decision win over Robert Easter Jr. to unify the WBC and IBF lightweight titles.

Easter got off to a quick start, throwing 15 punches in the first 40 seconds. Most of them were jabs, as Easter tried to put his reach advantage to good use by using the jab. Garcia was patient and not throwing much in round two, while Easter either answered back or continued to use the jab.

In the third round, Garcia countered a miss combination by Easter with a hook that sent Easter to the canvas. Easter got up but ate a flurry of shots for the remaining seconds of the round.

Easter was affected by the hook, as his output slowed in the fourth. Garcia still remained quite patient, but it felt like the bout’s control shifted into his favor. Easter once again threw more punches in the fifth, though Garcia landed the strongest, specifically an uppercut that shook up the defending IBF champion a bit.

After another close round six, it became apparent that Easter was only working the jab and not throwing much else. That may have been his undoing, as Garcia fully took over in the second half of the fight. Easter controlled the seventh, but late in the round Garcia landed the more powerful punches.

After Easter spent most of the eighth relying on his footwork, Garcia finally broke through Easter’s reach in the ninth, beginning to work his own jab and actually following up with combinations and punches in bunches. Garcia landed 40 percent of his punches in the 10th, and Easter threw little to nothing of significance in the championship rounds, sealing the win for Garcia.

The judges all scored the bout in Garcia’s favor, 116-111, 117-110, 118-109.

In the co-main event of the evening, Luis Ortiz scored a second-round knockout over Razvan Cojanu, while Mario Barrios defeated Jose Roman after Roman’s corner stopped the fight after the eighth.
