GLORY 37: Los Angeles Card Finalized
A GLORY middleweight championship bout will headline GLORY 37: Los Angeles, and the featherweight title will be on the line in the GLORY 37 SuperFight Series, the kickboxing organization has announced.
With the GLORY 37 card finalized on Thursday, a featherweight championship match featuring Robin van Roosmalen and Matt Embree, which was expected to be the GLORY 37 main event, was moved to the SuperFight Series. Now headlining the main card is Jason Wilnis defending the GLORY middleweight title against challenger Israel Adesanya.
Wilnis pulled off a shocking upset back at GLORY 33 SuperFight Series in Trenton, New Jersey, defeating Simon Marcus to win the middleweight championship. Meanwhile, Adesanya won a one-night, four-man middleweight contenders tournament at GLORY 34 in Denver, Colorado — picking up wins over Robert Thomas and Yousri Belgaroui — to earn this title shot.
At the same GLORY event in New Jersey where Wilnis had his surprise championship win, Embree made his GLORY debut. Pulling off a shock of his own, Embree scored knockouts over both Chibin Lim and Giga Chikadze to earn a featherweight title fight. At GLORY 34, van Roosmalen, the former lightweight champion, dropped down to featherweight to challenge Gabriel Vargas, dominating him so badly that Vargas’ corner stopped the fight after the fourth round. Van Roosmalen made history by becoming the first GLORY fighter to win a title in two separate weight classes.
In addition, GLORY 37 will feature a four-man welterweight contender’s tournament, featuring: Alan Scheinson, Karim Benmansour, Yoann Kongolo and Konstantin Khuzin. Guto Inocente will also be in action in a heavyweight co-headline bout against an opponent to be announced.
GLORY 37 takes place on Jan. 20 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
