GLORY To Hold Event in China
In Chinese culture, the date August 8th is seen as one full of luck. This year, it will also be a date where history will be made. On Aug. 8, GLORY Kickboxing will hold a press conference to announce details on the first-ever major combat sports event in China.
The Telegraph reports that GLORY has received an investment from Yao Capital, the equity firm of former NBA player Yao Ming. The deal calls for major events to be held in Asia. GLORY has media rights in many different countries, but China is a different story. The UFC and boxing events have come to Macau, but neither has been held in the mainland of China.
"The Chinese market for combat sports is going to be the largest market in the world," said Scott Rudman, co-founder and vice chairman of GLORY. "It’s larger than the market in the USA. I don’t think it’s going to take very long. Why? Because they have a billion people who have combat and martial arts in their DNA.
"The Chinese invented martial arts. It travelled from China and also Japan to the rest of the world. All this stuff we have now, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu and everything else, are derivates of what was invented in China. The Chinese people grow up understanding this and they have martial arts heroes as part of their culture.
"When we’re bringing Glory around the world, to new countries, like France or wherever it is we go, we sometimes have to educate people about what kickboxing and stand up combat is. You don’t need to educate anybody in China. They all know it. Right from the beginning. It is a massive market. We are really excited to be there."
The former NBA star said he partnered his brand up with GLORY because of the influence the sport of kickboxing has, and the affect it had on him.
"To me, the sport of kickboxing is a synonym for courage, grit and the will to succeed," Ming said. "As kickboxing is gaining worldwide popularity among the younger generation, Yao Capital is pleased to partner with GLORY, the world’s number one league in this field."
