Golovkin Fight Possible For Carson
When it seemed that Gennady Golovkin would return to Pay-Per-View on May 5th in Las Vegas, the Los Angeles Times is now reporting that Golovkin may have an opponent and a new venue.
Tom Loffler and GGG Promotions may be considering moving Golovkin’s scheduled May 5th clash at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, to the StubHub Center in Carson, California, and taking the fight off of pay-per-view.
Golovkin, who was set to face Canelo Alvarez in a rematch of their 2017 encounter, is still without an opponent for the May 5th date no matter the venue, and per the LA Times, the short notice change may not yield to high ticket sales in Vegas, no matter the venue.
In 2014, Golovkin set the attendance record for boxing at the StubHub Center, in a second round KO of Marco Antoinio Rubio, with 9,323.
The opponent seems to be down to two options in Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan and Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who is the IBF’s mandatory challenger, but Lance Pugmire of the Los Angles Times is claiming that the O’Sullivan is the most likely opponent.
