Golovkin-Martirosyan Is Most Watched Fight Of 2018
With less than a month to promote, and only two rounds of action, Gennady Golovkin’s return to the ring against Vanes Martirosyan still was the most watched fight of 2018.
Per a report from Nielsen Media Research, a peak audience of 1,361,000 witness Golovkin’s second round drubbing of Martirosyan on HBO’s broadcast from StubHub Center in Carson, California. The fight, which began at 12:07 am ET, had an average audience of 1,249,000 viewers.
Those numbers outpaced the now second most watched fight of the year on cable, which was Deontay Wilder’s 10th round win over Luis Ortiz on Showtime. The March 3rd showdown in Brooklyn reached a peak audience of 1,200,000 and an average audience of 1,100,000, as Wilder would knockout the Cuban fighter in the 10th round to retain his WBC world heavyweight crown.
The number also eclipsed Golovkin’s last appearance on HBO, when an average audience of 843,000 people watched Golovkin take down Kell Brook in September 2016.
The first women’s fight to ever air on the network in 45 years of boxing programming was also a major success, as Cecilia Braekhus’ successful defense of her undisputed welterweight titles, reached a peak audience of 1,024,000 people and an average audience of 904,000.
