Gustafsson Calls Jones “Best In The World”

Five years after their fight of the year at UFC 165, Alexander Gustafsson gets his rematch against Jon Jones, as they battle for the light heavyweight title at UFC 232.

“It’s just so much excitement,” Gustafsson said recently on The MMA Hour on getting his chance against Jones. “It’s so much motivation. I got this fire in me and I’m just eager to get in there again. It’s been a long time for me since I fought, and like I said, I can’t ask for more. I can’t find a better way to get back in that Octagon than fighting Jon for the belt. It’s just massive, man. It’s massive.”

Even with Jones’ various troubles, including failing two drug tests and spending most of the past few years under suspensions, Gustafsson feels that Jones will be sharp when they fight on December 29th.

“He’s a really talented fighter. He’s a very smart fighter,” Gustafsson said. “Whatever Jon does, in that Octagon he has a strategy and he’s a very smart fighter with a good eye, so you can’t relax. You can’t relax with this guy. You can’t even give him an inch. You have be on your toes the whole fight, you have to be ready the whole fight. So, that’s how I see Jon now. Jon has just been so impressive, that’s why he never lost. So, he is just that guy. He’s been beating everybody, so we all know how he is and how he’s been.

“He’s the best fighter in the world. For me, he’s the pound-for-pound best fighter, so like I said, I can’t relax for a second when I fight him.”

When asked about his UFC 192 loss to current light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, Gustafsson looks at it as a lesson he can carry into his third shot at the 205 pound title.

“Just experience,” Gustafsson said. “Just experience doing five rounds at a very high pace. That’s what I take, and I’m feeling confident. I feel my conditioning is one of my strengths. I feel like five rounds is nothing for me. So, I’m just going to win and I’m going to push like nobody’s pushed Jon before. I’m going make him be on his

“I have, and all I can say is words can’t describe that feeling, and I don’t even know how it will feel — I just know I will just be the king of the world. That’s it. I will be the king of the world. Nothing more, nothing less, and we’ll take it from there.”
