Hakuho Nears 39th Career Championship
The legendary yokozuna Hakuho is one step closer to his 39th career championship in sumo, as he defeated ozeki Goeido on July 22, the penultimate day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. Now, if Hakuho is successful tomorrow, he will win the tournament title.
Hakuho made sumo history on July 21, when he earned career victory No. 1,048, giving him the most victories in sumo history. The yokozuna made quick work of Goeido, grabbing the ozeki’s neck and throwing him down to the floor quickly.
With 13 wins in this basho, Hakuho can clinch the tournament tomorrow if he is successful against fellow yokozuna Harumafuji.
No. 8 maegashira Aoiyama, however, is not out of contention just yet. Aoiyama defeated maegashira Takekaze for his 12th win of the tournament, keeping him right behind Hakuho.
Aoiyama faces Yoshikaze, against whom he has a 7-10 record, tomorrow. If Aoiyama can win, he can force a final playoff match for the title if Hakuho is defeated by Harumafuji.
