Many boxing (and MMA) personalities, analysts, and fighters have written off Conor McGregor when it comes to his big superfight with Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26. But there is one boxer, Ricky Hatton, who finds a part of him rooting for The Notorious.
The British boxing star admits to BT Sport (via ABSCBN) that he has been a big fan of the current UFC lightweight champion.
"I’m a Conor McGregor fan. I mean what’s not to like about him? he’s charismatic… he can punch. He’s good for sports," Hatton said.
But he says that in his mind, he knows McGregor might be biting too much than he can chew since boxing and MMA are two unique and distinct disciplines. Not only does McGregor have no professional boxing experience, but Hatton says that even the greatest boxers have had trouble hitting Mayweather.
"You see Canelo couldn’t lay a punch on Mayweather. De La Hoya, a masterful boxer [couldn’t]" Hatton said. "I’m a little bit like Conor and [Mayweather] handled me, no problems. And that was my game, in fighting. [Mayweather is] the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. One of the greatest of all time and Conor has not had one boxing match yet.
"I do hope I’m wrong by the way. I hope he flattens Mayweather. I honestly do. But I honestly can’t see that."
