High Risk-High Reward For Jackson & Sonnen At Bellator 192

It has been nearly four years since the Bellator heavyweight championship has been put on the line, and two years since the title was stripped from Vitaly Minakov for refusing to defend his title. On January 20th, Bellator begins its heavyweight grand-prix as two stars of Mixed Martial Arts dip their toes into the pool of heavyweight fighting.

One of the fighters, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, has spent the majority of his career across PRIDE, UFC, and Bellator, at light heavyweight. He did move into over 250 pounds in his last fight against “King Mo” Lawal, a fellow grand prix contender. His opponent, Chael Sonnen, has never fought at heavyweight, and this may be the beginning of his final act as a fighter.

Sonnen, who claimed to not know he was in the tournament until the poster was released, recently re-signed with the promotion as a color commentator for their broadcasts on the Paramount Network. With that new deal, many think that Sonnen will retire from the cage, but with boasts that he would defend his title if he won the tournament, and a bet placed by Jackson that for every take down the grappler, Sonnen performs, Jackson will give his opponent $10,000.

Jackson, who has held championship gold before, he is determined to add one more to the trophy case. “I want to be heavyweight champion now,” Jackson said.

“I’m in this tournament. I get to be heavyweight champion if I win. I want that belt. I’ve got a PRIDE belt, I’ve got a UFC belt. I want the Bellator belt. Now that I’m in the tournament, why not?”

Watch Bellator 192, Saturday at 9pm EST on the Paramount Channel (formerly Spike).
