Holloway: Blessed and Undisputed
In front of a crowd shocked to silence, and tears streaming down faces, interim UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway defeated UFC world featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 212, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to become the undisputed champion.
Holloway did not start this fight off on the right foot, as he was not bouncing around as much and playing it very cautious in the first round. It might have cost him, as he did get rocked, but he got back into things quickly and survived the round. Holloway applied more pressure to Aldo in the second round, and he kept up with the inaugural UFC featherweight champion. In fact, Holloway looked so much more comfortable that he was taunting Aldo at the end of the second.
One big right hand from Holloway in the third, and Aldo went down. Holloway got into a top position and looked to throw bombs, but Aldo continuously tried to avoid the shots and pass through. Holloway also attempted a rear-naked choke twice, each time after an Aldo roll, but Aldo managed to avoid such. With over a minute left, with Aldo on his knees, Holloway instead delivered shots to the sides of the head from behind, eventually getting the TKO.
Aldo tried to protest the stoppage, but referee "Big" John McCarthy saw Aldo eat shot after shot and had to stop the bout.
This win, Holloway’s 11th in a row, now ties him for fourth-longest all-time in UFC history.
