Horn: Fighters Need To Respect Me
WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn believes he is being disrespected by some of the other boxers in the weight class, who believes that he’s not a factor in the division.
Horn captured the World Boxing Organization title back in July, when he pulled off an upset twelve round unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao in front of more than 50,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
A rematch with Pacquiao was planned for the fall, but then pushed back after the Filipino star withdrew citing scheduling conflicts with his duties as a senator in the Philippines.
So now Horn will make a voluntary defense against Gary Corcoran on December 13 in Brisbane.
Even months after the win, there are a lot of critics who believe Horn’s win over Pacquiao was highly controversial. The WBO actually held an investigation, and a recount, and upheld Horn’s win.
“The recount and things from last time really doesn’t bother me,” said Horn to the Gold Coast Bulletin. “I know there’s always going to be two sides and there’s going to be people saying I won and people saying I didn’t. I’ve just got to ignore all that, train hard and get ready for my next opponent who says he’s coming to take my belt.
“I’ve got to make this fight convincing. Corcoran, even though he’s tough and sometimes you can’t get those guys out of there, you’ve got to get the win. Where Corcoran is, he’s No. 10, he’s fighting for the top, so he knows there’s still a fair few guys above him. He knows he’s getting his shot early but he’s coming to fight and he’s not going to be underestimating what I’ve got — especially after watching the Manny Pacquiao fight.”
Fighters including WBC, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman made it known that they viewed Horn as a non-entity in the division.
Horn believes he is still being overlooked. He strongly feels that his standing in the division has to be acknowledged by the other champions at the weight.
“I do think some people are still underestimating me. The guys over there are thinking I’m nowhere near the unification possibility but I’ve got one of their belts and I’m ranked No. 1 on Boxrec, so they’ve got to come and beat me as well.”
