Hurd Earns Split Decision Over Lara

Entering the bout already the IBF Junior Middleweight Champion, Jarrett Hurd scored a decision over Erislandy Lara to also claim the WBA title in a title unification bout.

Lara outboxed Hurd in the first round, but Hurd came back in the second, pounding away at Lara against the ropes. Hurd continued his flurry of punches in the third, chasing down the WBA champ. Lara covered up and landed a counter-uppercut on Hurd, but Hurd still dominated the round.

Hurd landed multiple hooks in the fourth, but Lara started to answer back in the fifth, popping some shots on Hurd — but not enough to make Hurd back down.

After two back-and-forth rounds, Hurd dominated the eighth, and Lara seemed to be overwhelmed by the end of the ninth. Lara tried to get on the outside in the 10th round, but Hurd cut off Lara’s distance. Lara landed a couple of hard uppercuts, but Lara’s eye looked swollen.

Hurd then sealed the bout by dominating the final round, making Lara bleed from his swollen eye and dropping Lara in the final minute.

While one judge gave the fight to Lara 114-113, the other two saw it in Hurd’s favor 114-113, giving Hurd both titles.
