Jon Jones Fires Back At Gustafsson

Over the weekend Alexander Gustafsson put on a masterclass performance against Glover Teixeira, but made more headlines for his post-fight comments about former opponent Jon Jones. As expected, it did not take Jones long to respond to the Swede’s insults.

During the post-fight press conference, Gustafsson discussed the likelihood that he will be next in line to face the winner of Jones vs. Daniel Cormier, the light-heavyweight title fight that takes place on July 29 at UFC 214. Gustafsson has lost close decisions to both men, but he had a rather blunt reason for why he is rooting for Cormier.

“I don’t like [Jones],” Gustafsson said. “I give him that he’s the best fighter of all time, the best pound-for-pound fighter of our division — of course, everybody knows that. He hasn’t even lost a fight yet, he demolishes everyone he fights. But as a person, as a champion, he’s not a champion, in my eyes. He’s not a good person, in my eyes.

“That’s why I always tell the guys, ‘I hope that DC [Daniel Cormier] wins, because I like the guy, he’s a worthy champion. So that’s what I mean when I say that he’s the biggest enemy of all-time.”

Jones took to Twitter on Wednesday with a series of Tweets firing back at Gustafsson:

Though Jones and Gustafsson were respectful following their classic title fight in 2014, it is clear that there is now no love lost between two of the best 205 lb. fighters in the world. Given their history, another fight between the two is likely if Jones can defeat Cormier in July.
