Joshua To Meet With Hearn For 2018
Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport will be meeting withh WBA, IBO, IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua to map out the boxer’s 2018 schedule.
Joshua had a career defining year in 2017. His first fight of the year saw a record 90,000 fans come to Wembley Stadium to watch him stop Wladimir Klitschko in the eleventh round of a Fight of The Year contender. Joshua’s second and most recent fight on October 28th in Cardiff, Whales, saw the fighter defeat Carlos Takam in the tenth, which took place before another record crowd of 78,000 at Principality.
Hearn would like to see Joshua have at least three ring outings in 2018.
The first fight of the year will take place in the first quarter, then a summer bout and then a third fight before the end of 2018.
The big targets that will be potential opponents for those three fights are WBC champion Deontay Wilder, WBO champion Joseph Parker, and former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. A dark horse candidate can be David Haye, but that all depends on if he beats Tony Bellew in their much anticipated rematch in December.
In a conversation with Sky Sports, Hearn seems to have a few dates mapped out.
“We have a meeting next Tuesday to go through the plan for 2018. I think really we would like to box three times, and if that is going to happen maybe get out February/March, or maybe early April, then go again in the summer, and towards the end of the year.”
“Three things to take care of are the WBA mandatory at some point, when that is called, Deontay Wilder, Joseph Parker, maybe even Fury if he comes back into the sport.
“We have to get the balance right between doing the right deals and the right business for AJ, understanding that some fights aren’t as big as they should be yet, and Joshua v Wilder is a good example of that.
“This guy [Joshua] has seven, eight years left. He is going to go through everybody and you will see all these fights, it’s just a case of when and where.”
