It seems that if John Kavanagh could, he’d bet on a Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov fight happening in 2018.
While speaking with MMA Nytt’s Robin Black, he thinks its obvious that McGregor will look to earn back his lightweight title from Nurmagomedov by the end of the year.
“It’s the obvious fight, as his coach and as a fan,” Kavanagh said. “As a fan of MMA, it’s the fight I want to see as well. I would almost bet anything — almost bet anything — that fight happens before the end of the year.”
“I can’t imagine it not happening.”
While it seems both fighters want to square off inside the Octagon, McGregor’s legal troubles still stand in the way. With a court date set for July 26th, for charges of assault and criminal mischief, McGregor is looking for a plea deal to keep him from dealing with any prison time, and a return to fighting in the latter half of 2018. The incident took place at media day for UFC 223, where McGregor and nearly a dozen associates would attack a bus containing Nurmagomedov and other fighters, leading to injuries and arrests. McGregor’s attack was a retaliatory measure following a confrontation between the now UFC lightweight champion and McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov.
