Khabib: Alvarez-Poirier Winner Deserves Title Shot
While Khabib Nurmagomedov prepares to a return to the Octagon, he’s had his eyes on fights with former champions Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor. And while St-Pierre ponders his next steps as a fighter, and McGregor ponders his next moves in a criminal case, the UFC lightweight champion has some other options in mind.
“If not Conor, if not GSP, I think Alvarez vs. Poirier, I think the winner deserves a title shot,” Nurmagomedov told Anatomy of a Fighter recently.
Alvarez and Poirier are set for a rematch on July 28th at UFC on FOX 30 on July 28th. And while both would be in-line for a title shot with a win, the question of Tony Ferguson keeps coming up as an opponent for Nurmagomedov.
“About Tony Ferguson, I don’t know,” Nurmagomedov said.
“He just had surgery. If he can, why not? Tony Ferguson is biggest match-up for me. This match what I want, what people want, what fans want but I don’t know about his healthy. If he’s ready, let’s go. Why not? I’m ready for September, I’m ready for October, I’m training all the time. I’m here to defend my title. If the UFC gives me any opponent, I’m ready for this, to beat this guy.”
Ferguson and Nurmagomedov have been scheduled to face each other four times, but injuries have caused the fight to never happen. The last time was heading into the chaotic UFC 223, where Nurmagomedov would have two opponents pull out prior to fight night.
