Klitschko: Joshua Can Be Heavyweight King
Back in April, Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua battled it out in a heavyweight title fight that may go down as the Fight of the Year for 2017. And in the end, Joshua became the first man since 2004 to stop Klitschko, winning the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles in the process.
That bout became the last of Klitschko’s career. While many hoped for a re-match between the two, Klitschko chose retirement.
The bout also helped Klitschko find a great deal of respect for the 28-year-old heavyweight champion, as the fight proved to be one of the most exciting of his career, despite numerous title defenses over the years. That being said, Klitschko tells The Sun that hopes Joshua truly is the future of boxing’s heavyweight scene.
I’d say the more Joshua shines, the better I shine. If I lost, I want to make sure I lost to the better man. I wish, from the bottom of my heart, he continues to carry this torch for a long time and is very successful just like I was. I have passed the torch to the younger lion.
Talks have been ongoing for a potential title unification bout between Joshua and WBO champion Joseph Parker, but nothing is official as of Dec. 16.
