Kovalev: I Will Finish Ward’s Career
Sergey Kovalev has shared the ring with Andre Ward for twelve rounds so far, and he knows what it will take to defeat the American who took his belts last November. On Saturday, Kovalev will look to not only beat Ward — as many believed he already did — but dominate him so that the judges have no choice but to award him the victory.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the fight, Kovalev even said that he plans on making sure this fight is Ward’s last.
“I will finish [Ward’s] boxing career because like, right now, I’m already in a corner and I don’t have like another way except like get a victory over him…it’s a necessary victory," Kovalev said.
During the press conference ahead of the bout, Ward’s trainer Virgil Hunter made some disparaging comments about Kovalev. But the Ukrainian former champion isn’t letting trash talk get into his head this time, as he knows that his American opposition is just trying to take advantage of having the fight on home soil once again.
“Well…they can say everything, you know, because they are at home and they are speaking to public [in] their native language and for people with American [mentality]. But I will see how [they will talk] if they will be in my country, but they will never go to my country because Andre Ward is a hometown champion. He never fought out of the USA. Never – in the pros.
“Yeah, would champions should be fighting everywhere. Okay, I fought in your country, Las Vegas, ok, why you [don’t] want to fight in New York? No, they [don’t] want to fight in New York. They want to fight in Las Vegas again because like they have a big support, big support, there.”
