Kovalev-Mikhalkin Signed for March

WBO/IBA Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey Kovalev (31-2-1, 27 KOs) will continue his quest to reclaim the light heavyweight gold he lost, as he faces IBO Champion Igor Mikhalkin in a unification bout at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on March 3.

Kovalev held the WBA, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles from late 2014 until November 2016, when he lost a controversial decision to Andre Ward. Ward went on to win the rematch later that June. It was the first two times in Kovalev’s pro career he had been defeated, the latter of which being the first time he’s been stopped.

Kovalev rebounded by winning the vacant WBO and IBA titles last month at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, defeating Vyacheslav Shabranskyy with a second-round TKO.

Mikhalkin (21-1, 9 KOs), meanwhile, will come into this bout riding a 10-fight win streak. In his last outing, just a few weeks ago, Mikhalkin made his first successful title defense against Doudou Ngumbu. Mikhalkin won the then-vacant IBO title back in May, when he scored a decision over Thomas Oosthuizen.
