Lemieux Ready for Canelo, Saunders
After Gennady Golovkin’s tough victory over Daniel Jacobs this past Saturday, the middleweight division picture has more clarity, and David Lemieux is figuring out where he fits into it.
Following Lemieux’s devastating knockout victory over Curtis Stevens, his stock is as high as it’s ever been. So while boxing fans are still hoping that a Golovkin showdown with Canelo Alvarez is just around the corner, the Canadian slugger is keeping his name in the hat in case GGG can’t make a deal happen.
“We would love to have Canelo. Right now Canelo has a fight against Chavez, so it’s a bit premature. Plus they’re negotiating with Golovkin, so that’s their priority. But if for any reason that doesn’t happen, then we’d like that fight,” said Lemieux’s promoter Camille Estephan.
Lemieux (37-3, 33 KOs) and his camp at Eye of the Tiger Management aren’t just eyeing the two biggest North American-based stars however. The former IBF titleholder is very confident in his ability to defeat current WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders as well.
"We would (fight Saunders) in a heartbeat. Tomorrow, if he wants. We want the world titles. But I think with David’s performance, Billy Joe Saunders ain’t gonna be running to us,” said Estephan.
Estephan says he has already had very preliminary discussions with HBO regarding Lemieux’s next bout, and has several events in the Montreal area already mapped out for the coming months. It’s not out of the question then, that if a big fight could be made, that it could land in the boxing hotbed of Quebec.
“We have a great market here in Montreal. Our fanbase is very strong. They love real, good fights. If it’s a world title for David Lemieux, we would pack the house,” said Estephan.
“I think David has proven that if he’s not the most exciting fighter in boxing, then one of the most exciting fighters. I really don’t see any other fighters more exciting than him right now.”
