Lewis: Stipe Deserved Shot Before Me, Stipe Agrees
While a few days ago Derrick Lewis felt he wasn’t ready for a title shot, the Houston native takes his place in history as he faces Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight crown at UFC 230.
Lewis told TMZ Sports this week that he’s excited for the opportunity, which will come less than a month after his walk-off knockout of Alexander Volkov at UFC 229.
“I’m going there to win, especially at Madison Square Garden,” Lewis told TMZ on Tuesday.
When asked about the man that Cormier beat to become the second “champ champ” in UFC history at UFC 224, Stipe Miocic, Lewis felt he should have gotten the opportunity before Lewis.
“I believe that Stipe really deserved the shot since he was the champion for a while … I don’t know why they gave it to me before they gave it to Stipe.”
Miocic emphatically agreed, taking to Twitter on Tuesday to blast the booking for Madison Square Garden and take aim at the man who knocked him out in the first round.

Cormier would take very little time to call out the “thirsty Miocic
You beat me that night. I respect that. But it would never happen again. I carried the torch in this division for a long time. I’ve been staying up all night with my new born daughter and I still offered to fight you nov 3 with ZERO camp weeks ago.
