Loeffler Admits Concern Over Canelo Test
Following Monday’s startling announcement that Canelo Alvarez had tested positive for trace amounts of Clenbuterol, many were wondering what the reaction would be from his May 5th opponent, Gennady Golovkin.
As of one day after the announcement, there has been no word from Golovkin, but his promoter, Tom Loeffler spoke with Yahoo Sports after the news broke about Alvarez’ positive.
“We just found out and we’re going to see how the Commission and the sanctioning bodies address it,” Loeffler told Yahoo Sports on Monday evening.
“Any time there is a positive test, it’s a concern, but we’ll rely on them to do their jobs and go from there. There is not much else to comment on.”
Loeffler claims that both trainer Abel Sanchez and Golovkin are huge advocates of both fighters being tested by VADA, as to ensure a level playing field on May 5th in Las Vegas.
“Abel has always wanted as much testing as possible because he never wanted any doubt that Gennady’s power is all natural,” said Loeffler.
“Gennady has only wanted a level playing field and respect for boxing. He just wants it to be fair for both sides. That’s why VADA [the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency] is in place.”
“Hopefully, this doesn’t affect the fight itself,” he added.
