Lomachenko Wins 3rd Weight Class Title

Vasyl Lomachenko has become the quickest fighter in boxing to win world titles in three different weight classes, as he finishes Jorge Linares in the 10th round to become the new WBA Lightweight Champion.

No boxer ever had earned this accomplishment in less than 20 fights, but Lomachenko has now world titles in three different weight classes just 12 fights into his career.

“I’m very happy and I want to say thank you to all of the fans who came out to MSG and Jorge Linares,” Lomachenko said after the fight.

The opening round was a feeling out process, though fighters were throwing a lot. Linares, the bigger fighter, seemed to be in control of the second round, though he had to take note of Lomachenko’s speed and footwork. Linares continued to try and make himself busy in round three, while Lomachenko worked the body.

It was clear Linares was somewhat frustrated by Lomachenko’s speed, as he was warned once for rabbit punching and twice for low blows. Linares was cut in the fifth and Lomachenko ended the round with a significant flurry of punches, and it seemed the defending champions’ reach and size advantages meant nothing.

But then in the sixth, Lomachenko walked right into a right hand from Linares and met the canvas.

That knockdown marked a turning point in the bout, as it seemed to shake Lomachenko’s confidence and help boost Linares’. Linares, however, did suffer a cut above his left eye in the eighth, which Lomachenko tried to target with the jab throughout the eighth. Linares came back strong in the ninth.

But in the 10th round, a perfectly timed liver shot finished things off.

Lomachenko gave Linares credit in the widely-praised fight and even said he would have no problem accepting a rematch.
