Luis Ortiz Eyeing Fury Or Povetkin
While Luis Ortiz was left out in the cold for a potential fight against Dillian Whyte, the former world championship contender has his eyes on a few big opponents.
Ortiz’ manager Jay Jimenez claimed in an interview with Boxing Scene that former WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO champion Tyson Fury and mandatory challenger to Anthony Joshua’s IBF crown Alexander Povetkin are their targets.
Fury just returned from a two and a half year layoff last weekend when he stopped Sefer Seferi in four rounds, while Povetkin is being used as leverage in Anthony Joshua’s negotiations with Deontay Wilder for a heavyweight unification fight this fall.
“Luis feels Fury is the best fight to make besides Povetkin because Wilder won’t offer the rematch that we have been asking for,” Jimenez told BoxingScene.com.
Fury will return to the ring against an unnamed opponent August 18th on Carl Frampton’s undercard which will take place at Windsor Park in Belfast. While it most likely will be another warm up fight for the former world champ, Ortiz is ready for the challenge.
“Fury or Povektkin. He is top 5 in our book. Either one is what we want for Luis’ next fight,” said Jimenez.
