When asked about Mikey Garcia’s chances in a potential fight against Errol Spence Jr, the former world champion and current promoter, Floyd Mayweather, thinks Garcia should fight Vasyl Lomachenko.
“With the Errol Spence fight, that’s tough. That’s a tough fight for him. The Errol Spence fight is definitely a tough fight for him. His chances of beating Lomachenko are a lot better than his chances of beating Errol Spence. Lomachenko can’t take it to the body,” Mayweather said to Fight Hype.
Even with that, Mayweather believes the California native deserves credit to want to move up in weight and face off with Spence. “You have to respect Mikey Garcia for wanting to test his skills against the best guys out there. You can’t fault him for doing it, you can’t overlook Mikey Garcia in a fight with Errol Spence. Errol Spence can fight his a** off…it’s a good matchup. Spence, he’s tough, he’s strong, he can bang,” Mayweather claimed in an interview.
“Lomachenko can’t take it to the body and we already seen that Lomachenko got knocked down and he didn’t even get hit hard [by Jorge Linares in May]. So anything can happen in the sport of boxing.”
Even with Garcia and Spence both having a working relationship with Al Haymon, Garcia has a potential mandatory showdown against Richard Commey by the IBF, who stripped Garcia of their junior welterweight title due to not accepting a mandatory fight against Ivan Baranchyk to face Robert Easter Jr.
