Mayweather Not Allowed to Bet on Himself
Floyd Mayweather will walk away from his 10th round victory over Conor McGregor with hundreds of millions of dollars, but he wanted to make even more. According to ESPN, Mayweather attempted to place a large bet on himself the day of the fight but was denied by the casino.
The boxer reportedly showed up at the M Resort’s sportsbook around 3:30 PM the day of the fight, where he tried to wager $400,000 that the fight would end in under 9.5 rounds at -200 odds. The casino did not allow him to make the bet as there were questions as to the legality of a fighter putting money on a prop bet; it is legal for him to bet on himself, but the casino believed that only betting on a straight win was allowed.
Mayweather also tried to bet on himself to win by knockout but left after being forced to wait at the sportsbook.
Either bet would have ultimately cashed in as a win for Mayweather; he won by TKO 1 minute and 5 seconds into the tenth round.
Mayweather confirmed to ESPN that they wouldn’t let him place the bet, but he added that he was able to have one of his people place a wager down for him.
“I think that we bet 100 (thousand) on 9½. I gave my guy six figures to go bet. I have to make sure he bet because earlier today I went to the sports book to bet and they wouldn’t let me bet.”
