Mazany Wins EFC Title At EFC 72

Dave Mazany came to EFC 72 looking to win back the EFC lightweight title and he did so with a hard-fought battle against Martin van Staden.

Mazany defeated van Staden to win the EFC lightweight title in the main event of EFC 72. Mazany won the title with a split decision (48-46, 46-48, 49-45).

It was a classic case of the wrestler going up against the striker. Mazany was able to assert his wrestling abilities early on in the fight by taking down van Staden a couple of times in the opening round. Mazany was also able to land knee strikes to van Staden in the opening round with Mazany pinning his opponent to the cage.

Van Staden did get his opportunity to shine in the second round, thanks to his right hand which stunned Mazany a couple of times. At the end of the round, van Staden nearly won the fight when one of his strikes hurt Mazany and Mazany tumbled down, but before van Staden could take advantage of the opportunity, Mazany was saved by the bell.

The third round proved to be detrimental to van Staden’s shot at winning the fight in the scorecards. After van Staden landed a couple of spinning back kicks, he had Mazany pinned to the cage but the champion held on to the cage and he was then deducted a point by the referee.

Van Staden did have another shot to win the fight by stoppage in the final round, when he continuously landed more and more punches to hurt Mazany. Thanks to a well-timed takedown to stop van Staden’s momentum late in the round, Mazany was able to survive all the way until the end of the fight.

Although van Staden had landed the better strikes, Mazany had more time effectively landing takedowns and winning rounds thanks to his wrestling. The point deduction did not help van Staden, but it didn’t factor in too much into the final decision.

The fight headlined a big card that saw multiple finishes take place within the first couple of rounds of their respective fights.

In the co-main event, Gideon Drotschie defeated Jenaid Andre Ebanks by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28) in what ultimately became a blood-filled battle between the two fighters.

Faeez Jacobs got yet another stoppage win but this time it came in the form of a submission and not a TKO. He submitted  Tumisang Madiba in just the first round thanks to a guillotine choke.

Justin Smith may have had the most sensational finish of the night when he landed a vicious left hand to knock out Giovanni Pretorius in the first round.

But even with the aforementioned first-round finishes, it Matunga Djikasa who had the quickest finish, sending a statement to the entire heavyweight division with just a 28-second knockout victory over Willem Smith.
