Mikey Garcia Meets With Dana White Ahead Of His Title Fight
With the prospect of winning a world championship in a fourth weight class, Mikey Garcia is focused on taking away the IBF Junior Welterweight title from Sergey Lipinets, while keeping an eye on his future.
Garcia recently refused to work with Golden Boy for a proposed fight with Jorge Linares, due to the promotion offering a multi-fight contract. Then during training camp for this fight, he was visited by UFC President Dana White.
White, who has made it clear that he’s interested in promoting boxing in 2018, flew out to Garcia’s camp to watch him spar and prepare for Lipinets.
Garcia while talking to FIGHT SPORTS, said “it was very cool to have him stop by and catch a day at the gym and watch me spar.”
When asked about if he’d be interested in working with White, Garcia expressed interest if the opportunity was there, claiming that…
“I’m down to speak with anyone, I’m up to hear anyone out especially someone who has the promotional background he’s had. He’s done a great thing with the UFC… I believe he can do something big if he really wanted to in boxing.”
Garcia also told FIGHT SPORTS that the visit may have been more than a visit…
“He actually had several conversations with different team members. So, who knows? Maybe he does something in boxing that excites me enough to work with him also.”
The three division champion also said that he’d consider walking into the Octagon if there were an opportunity after retirement. Garcia has trained in MMA a bit and claims that he wouldn’t be a “newbie” in the cage, saying if there was a “fight that makes sense,” that he’s “always ready for a challenge.”
