Mikey Garcia Open To Lomachenko Fight
While the window may be closing for Jorge Linares on getting a fight with WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia, it seems Vasyl Lomachenko may have caught Garcia’s eye.
After Lomachenko would finish Linares in the 10th round of their WBA lightweight title fight, Garcia claimed that he’d be open for a fight with the now three division champion.
“Lomachenko did good, beat a solid world champion at 135. I would love a fight with him. Hope we can make it happen in the near future,” Garcia stated to the Los Angeles Times.
Garcia, who is rumored to be signing with Dana White’s Zuffa boxing brand, had been tied to a potential fight with Linares for nearly a year, and Linares was Garcia’s WBC mandatory, but he would end up taking the fight with Lomachenko.
Even with the interest with Garcia, there are many logistical hurdles that would need to be addressed before a fight was made. The first one being the same as the Lomachenko-Linares fight, where both fighters are signed to different networks. Garcia has a deal through Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime, and Lomachenko is tied to ESPN via Top Rank.
The bigger issue would also lie in Garcia’s feud with Lomachenko’s promoter Top Rank. Garcia would walk away from boxing for two years to battle Bob Arum’s company in court over issues Garcia had with the promotion.
