Okami Replaces Shogun for UFC Japan
On a night filled with two big middleweight boxing title matches, as well as the UFC return of Luke Rockhold, the UFC made a breaking news announcement during its Fight Night event — regarding the Fight Night in Japan in just six nights.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who was scheduled to compete against Ovince Saint Preux in the main event of the UFC Fight Night event this coming Friday, has been forced to pull from the card due to injury.
Saint Preux will now face Yushin Okami, who will be making his return to the UFC. Okami’s first run in the UFC was from 2006 to 2013, picking up victories over the likes of Mike Swick, Evan Tanner, Mark Nunoz, Nate Marquardt, and Hector Lombard. At UFC 134 in August 2011, he received a middleweight title shot against Anderson Silva but lost via second-round TKO.
Okami also has faced the likes of Chael Sonnen and Ronaldo Souza before being released in 2013. Okami has had several fights in the WSOF (now PFL) since being released, including a failed middleweight title shot against David Branch.
