Pacquiao-Matthysse Undercard Set
The WBA “regular” welterweight title won’t be the only world title on the line on the July 15 Malaysian boxing event headlined by Manny Pacquiao vs. Lucas Matthysse.
According to Dan Rafael, WBA “regular” light flyweight champion Carlos Canizales will defend his title against Lu Bin at the event. Lu Bin fought for China in the 2016 Summer Olympics and turned pro last year, having only fought once so far in his career. If Bin picks up the WBA title by beating Canizales, he would break the record for fewest pro fights fought to win a world title as the record is three fights set by Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2014 and Saensak Muangsurim in 1975.
In the other world title bout on the undercard, Moruti Mthalane will face Muhammad Waseem for the vacant IBF flyweight title. The title was vacated by Donnie Nietes in a quest to win a world title in a fourth weight class and so the IBF ordered Mthalane and Waseem, the two highest ranked available flyweights, to fight for the vacant title.
As far as the Pacquiao vs. Matthysse fight being televised in the United States, there is still no word on if the fight will land on ESPN television or on the ESPN+ streaming service.
