Possible Replacement Opponents for GGG
Between Canelo Alvarez’s hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission being pushed back to April 18, and refunds already being offered for the rematch with Gennady Golovkin, it’s looking less and less likely the May 5 bout will happen.
As reported by Bad Left Hook, there is already a lot of talk about potential replacements to step in for Canelo in the event the commission bars him from fighting on May 5. Three names that have come up include Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan, Demetrius Andrade and WBO Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders.
Saunders is scheduled to defend his title against Martin Murray in June. The bout was originally booked for April 14 but was pushed back due to injury. Promoter Frank Warren said replacing Canelo and facing GGG would be a possibility as long as Saunders is at 100 percent.
Andrade threw his name in quickly, stating he is “ready and willing” to compete on May 5 and would begin VADA testing “immediately.”
O’Sullivan was suggested as a potential opponent by ESPN’s Dan Rafael. O’Sullivan is currently scheduled for a Golden Boy fight card on May 4 in Las Vegas.
