Ramirez Wants Future Bout with Canelo
The boxing world was taken by some surprise when it was announced WBA/WBC Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez’s next bout — on Dec. 15 at Madison Square Garden — would be contested at super middleweight.
Alvarez will step up a weight class to challenge WBA (Regular) Super Middleweight Champion Rocky Fielding. With a win, Alvarez would become a three-division world champion. It’s unknown what Alvarez’s future would hold with a win — the WBC is allowing him to make a voluntary defense — though he would have plenty of options to decide on as one of the sport’s biggest stars.
But if Canelo were to win and somehow stay at super middleweight in 2019, one man that is pushing for a fight with him is a fellow Mexican boxing star in WBO Super Middleweight Champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez. Ramirez is also slated for a December return to the ring, defending his title against Jesse Hart for the second time.
“Canelo is a great fighter and I hope he wins,” Ramirez said. “I also have a fight coming up and I am preparing myself to get the win. After both of our commitments are taken care of I would love to fight the highest rated fighter of the present in a mega fight.”
