RDA to Make Welterweight Debut in Singapore
Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos announced late last year that he planned to move up to the 170 lb. division following two tough losses. This week it was announced that Dos Anjos will make his welterweight debut at UFC Singapore in June against Tarec Saffiedine.
The fight was confirmed by Channel News Asia on Monday.
Dos Anjos (25-9) entered 2016 as the lightweight champion and was considered to potentially become one of the most dominant champions in the division’s history. He then proceeded to have an extremely rocky year: He pulled out of a super-fight title defense against Conor McGregor in March, and then lost his belt in a knockout loss against Eddie Alvarez in July. Dos Anjos tried to rebound in November against Tony Ferguson, but lost convincingly in a five-round decision.
Saffiedine (16-6) has lost back-to-back split decisions against Rick Story in May and Dong Hyun Kim in December. Prior to that, he defeated Jake Ellenberger by decision in January.
Dos Anjos vs. Saffiedine will reportedly not serve as the main event for the Singapore card, which remains to be announced.
