Rockhold Wants Heavyweight Fight With Werdum

Former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold is in a bit of a no man’s land given the state of the division he once ruled. With Michael Bisping fighting Georges St. Pierre and the rest of the top contenders waiting in a frustrated heap, Rockhold has announced the fight he wants to return to the cage for, and it’s a surprising one.

According to Ariel Helwani, Rockhold is pushing hard for a fight with former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, and is willing to move up two divisions to get it.

Rockhold’s desire to fight Werdum is a result of years of ill will between the two, dating back to their days in Strikeforce before it was bought by the UFC. Werdum defeated Rockhold’s teammate Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight belt in 2015 before losing it a year later. The resentment between Rockhold and Werdum has remained potent, and the top middleweight is looking to settle the score.

The former 185 lb. champion appearing on UFC Tonight and confirmed that he was looking to fight Werdum.

“Everyone’s steaming over this new fight I brought up. I think me and [Fabricio] Werdum got some old beef from Strikeforce. He’s a guy I’ve always wanted to fight,” Rockhold revealed (via Fox Sports). “I’ve thought it through and I like the style matchup.

“Given what’s going on in the middleweight division right now, screw that, I’m coming to heavyweight. Let’s do this.”
