Yoel Romero was unable to make the 185-pound middleweight limit ahead of his UFC 221 interim title main event bout with Luke Rockhold.
As reported by MMA Fighting, Romero weighed in at 188.3 pounds on his first attempt, and then 187.7 two hours later. As a result, only Rockhold is eligible to win the interim UFC Middleweight Title tonight. A Romero win will mean no interim champion.
Rockhold agreed to go on with the bout following quite the negotiating period with the UFC early Saturday morning. Rockhold was originally supposed to challenge champion Robert Whittaker until Whittaker pulled out due to injury last month.
The last UFC fighter to miss weight for a title fight was Anthony Pettis, who missed weight prior to an interim featherweight title bout with Max Holloway at UFC 206. Travis Lutter missed weight prior to his Middleweight Title shot against Anderson Silva at UFC 67, changing the bout to a non-title contest.
